Why is intersectionality important?

REPLACE_ME

Everyone has their own makeup of race, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, etc., which means they should be treated as unique individuals and be respected as such. This is an aspect of intersectionality and it’s essential to consider when building your community, so that everyone feels included and accepted. People come from different backgrounds, have their own experiences and have ideas on how to create inclusive spaces. It’s important that everyone feels heard and respected equally.

It’s also a good idea to set up ground rules to make sure there’s shared understanding amongst a group of people who don’t know each other well. Be as specific as possible so there is no confusion.

Some ground rules to start with:

  • Be aware that everyone has different life experiences. So try not to assume anything about anyone.
  • Don’t make generalizations about the group (i.e., “Everyone likes to….”).
  • Everyone has the freedom to share their opinion or not. It’s up to them.
  • Try not to speak on behalf of other people.
